President-elect Donald Trump has attacked Georgia Rep. John Lewis after he stated that Trump was not a legitimate president.

In a series of tweets, Trump wrote, “Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk, talk – no action or results. Sad,”

John Lewis is a well respected civil rights icon and was an ally of Martin Luther King.  He was brutally beaten by police in Selma, Alabama in 1965 while on a civil rights march.  He represents the Georgia area which includes most of the city of Atlanta.

“I don’t see this President-elect as a legitimate president”

When Trump was campaigning he pledged to revitalise areas primarily populated by Black Americans and to fight crime.

Lewis, who is a Clinton supporter, said “I don’t see this President-elect as a legitimate president.”  He was talking to CNN at the time and he was talking in reference to the alleged Russian hack on the Democratic Party servers.

Trump’s attack on the civil rights legend brought unfavourable responses.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, tweeted, “Ahead of #MLKday2017, let us remember that many have tried to silence @repjohnlewis over the years. All have failed,”

While California Sen. Kamala Harris tweeted, “John Lewis is an icon of the Civil Rights Movement who is fearless in the pursuit of justice and equality. He deserves better than this,”

Frequent Trump critic, Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, praised Lewis, .@repjohnlewis knows true sacrifice. @realDonaldTrump has no clue. When cluelessness collides with power oppression results. Resistance”

Lewis isn’t the only senator who is boycotting the inauguration.  As many believe Russia helped Trump win the election.

Lewis told NBC News, “You cannot be at home with something that you feel that is wrong.”
